The Malaga Picasso Museum (MPM) has been reinvigorated by the direction of Jose Lebrero, whose plan to attract the maximum audience possible is to bring contemporary artists who have a connection with the genius Picasso.

His magnificent new plan opens with an installation by famous video art pioneer Bill Viola, born in 1951 in New York. His work is characterized by plasma screens, electronic music and sound environments. The connection between Viola’s work and Picasso rests in their human qualities, both internal and external. Both artists reflect emotions such as loneliness, anxieties about life and death and curiously investigate dualities. In particular there is a connection to Picasso’s Blue Period, when his close friend Carles Casagemas died.

The exhibition is entitled “Figurative Works” and consists of three installations taken from his “Transfiguration” series, fruit of the death of his mother and the birth of his son. The three elected assemblies are “The arrangement” (2007), “Incarnation” (2008) and finally “Three Women” (2008).

They depict a number of people who constantly come from the darkness and pass through a curtain of water before returning to the darkness. Apart from some brief instructions to the actors, Bill Viola let each act as they felt to get different reactions from them. You can also enjoy a 13 minute audiovisual presentation which explains some common features between the two artists. The exhibit also features a movie called “The Eye of the Heart” directed by Mark Kidel every Tuesday at 12 pm about so-called “Encounters” which talks about the connection between these two great masters .
